No Taxes Without Road Racer Representation!

Road racing?

In White Rock?

Perish the thought.

Tracy Holmes, of the Black Press, has the story:

More than a dozen high-end vehicles spotted southbound on Highway 99 at speeds estimated at up to 200 km/h were seized in South Surrey and White Rock Wednesday.

White Rock RCMP Const. Janelle Shoihet said police in the two communities were tasked to assist Deas Island RCMP, after the highway patrol fielded several complaints regarding the fast-paced vehicles around 3:30 p.m.

All of the vehicles were travelling "well over the posted speed limit," Shoihet said, and included Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis – a combined value of more than $2 million....

But here's the real thing.

If they were bought after the HST came into effect last July, none of those kids (or, more likely, their parents) had to pay the former 3% luxury tax on any of their Lambo's.

As a result, single Moms have, instead, been forced to pay an extra 7% on their diapers to help make up the difference.

Which, thanks to Kevin Falcon's foot-dragging, they are still paying.

The single Moms, not the Street Racer-Boyz, I mean.

OK?

I'm not sure how well a 3% luxury tax on cars would work. People go through the time and effort to go down to the States to get the car they want, or at least at the price they want.

Go and buy from much closer/easier Alberta and save 3% on that much money? Hell yes!

A 3% luxury tax on auto insurance for those vehicles is really the only thing that would hit them all.

Insurance is a fine idea - good point.

The thing is, in addition, the 3% tax DID work. It was in place until last July 1st.

This is all detailed, with explicit crowing of that fact from the head of the New Car Dealers Association, at the link in the post.

And does not the BC Govt collect the tax when out of province cars are registered here???????????? Or was this a 'bonus' exclusion from Gordo the Magnificent for our local elites????. Just asking.
