At The End Of The Day...
....Folks who cut the corner, going left, do know that they are, essentially, crossing the center line into ongoing traffic don't they?
Heckfire.
This morning a nice young chap in a big SUV actually cut behind me as he swooped left off of Blenheim onto 13th as I sat at a stop sign.
There was just a wee bit of that 'flashing before mine eyes' going on for a beat or two.

And have any of you fellow cyclists noted how some vehicle drivers are zooming up arterial parallel residential side-street bike routes during rush hour because it's actually faster, even with the traffic circles and speed bumps?...10th Avenue between Granville and Oak is a pretty good example.

One of my traffic calming theories is that one of the reasons residential streets have become clogged is because folks park their vehicles on the street in front of their houses and not in their "garages" in the back lane. Like who parks their vehicle in the "garage"? Isn't that where we are supposed to store our junk? And think about it. Many Vancouver homes (still standing quite well, thank you very much) were built in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when families had only one car. I know that 2 cars travelling in opposite directions in my street have to take turns stopping and allowing the car travelling in the opposite direction to pass because there isn't space between the parked cars on both sides of the street to allow two cars to pass going in opposite directions.

If we didn't store our 'junk' in the garage we'd probably have to move out of our house.
But I hear you.
The residential streets really are clogged with parked cars.
And the street mentioned in the post sure is one of them.

I have saved myself a great deal of time by-passing arterial traffic down Van's leafy side streets many a time. I just follow the city folk who appear to know the best way to do it.

The reason that the garages are full of stuff is because of secondary suites (legal and/or illegal) taking over the basement which used to house all that said stuff in the garage.
And then there's the tenants cars, added to the street.
And, the illegal secondary suite landlords are NOT paying extra for Water, Sewer, and Garbage. They are not even declaring the rent money as Income.

To be fair...There are some pretty reckless cyclists 'round here as well...Interestingly, those that take residential bike routes tend to be, in my experience, more conscientious overall...My theory?...Those that choose such routes are actually willing to stay off sidewalks and wait at stop signs/red lights in exchange for the increased safety.
